General Discussion / LotRO Legendary Server
« on: November 10, 2018, 05:28:27 PM »
Is anyone playing, or intending to play on the new legendary (Anor) server that opened Thursday evening? I've been playing since yesterday morning with my Elf Hunter and it's been quite fun. The server is packed with people in the starter areas, something I haven't experienced in years but having a PC that's a few generations beyond what we were playing with in the early days, it runs really smooth at Ultra high settings and I'm getting 150 fps plus at 1920 x 1080. It's only for lifetimers and VIP players as it's not a FTP server but I think we all have lifetime accounts don't we? If you do try it out, my character is Trodor. Level 14 at the moment but nearly 15. I just reached Combe before logging out a few minutes ago, so as soon as I hit 15 I'll run to the Bree Mayor's office to get my surname. Hopefully, I'll be able to get my old "Taranis" surname.

Is anyone else playing KCD? I bought it last week and am absolutely hooked with 45 hours played so far. It's an RPG like no other I've played, with engrossing storylines and a depth to the quests, even the side story ones, I've not seen before. It often takes hours to complete one and a huge number of options arise that can completely change the outcome. I've seen people comparing this game favourably with both Skyrim, which I haven't played and Oblivion, which I have. I'd definitely score this more highly than Oblivion for the depth of questing.

It does have a steep learning curve though as they take a different approach to some of what are normally standard controls for this type of game. Riding a horse for instance. It took me a while to realise I found it easier to use my right hand to steer the horse and the left to press on the shift button, which is the canter forward key. That then leaves the right hand also free to use the mouse to look around the surroundings as the horse will continue in a straight line in open countryside or follow the road if you're on one as long as the shift key is being pressed. The other thing is game saves. They are very restricted, annoyingly the most so in the 5 hour long!!!!!!!! Yes 5 hours tutorial, which actually took me 5.7 hours  :-[ The best way is to find a bed to sleep in. Otherwise, it takes a very expensive and hard to come by potion. Many other controls are pretty standard though..... WASD for controlling the character on foot. LMB main attack, RMB offhand or secondary attack, J for Journal, I for inventory, C for crouch/stealth etc.

You may have read about bugs with this game. Yes there are some but I've managed to work around them and have only had a couple of side quests so bugged that I can't complete them yet. I've had just one crash in the 45 hours just as I finished a quest. Unfortunately, that meant having to spend fifteen minutes doing it again but at least I'd managed to save the game by sleeping in a nearby bed before starting and it didn't crash the next time I reached the same point. Overall, I think it's as good as most games when first released.

If anyone else just starting the game needs any tips ask me but YouTube has masses of tutorials already.

General Discussion / Elite Dangerous Add-On

Has anyone used the HCSVoicepacks? I've never heard of them before. I've heard of Voice Attack but never used that either.

Despite buying the Oculus Rift and Thrustmaster HOTAS back in the summer, I still haven't played Elite Dangerous at all this year. I'm wondering whether voice commands could be another reason to log in again?

General Discussion / My new 2018 Gaming PC
« on: October 05, 2017, 07:01:17 PM »
I originally included this with my post about new games but realised it's really a separate subject, so I'm dividing it into two posts:

I usually build myself a new PC every three years or so and the one I've been using will reach that age around Xmas time. With all these new games coming out, I decided to bring things forward and completed a new build just in time for the Battlefront 2 beta. It was touch and go as to whether it would be ready though. I ordered all the components from Amazon the weekend before last and originally had a Gigabyte Z170-HD3P motherboard with 16 GB of Corsair Vengeance 3000Mhz DD4R4 RAM. However, when I tried to boot it up, the fans spun but all I got was five long beeps recurring. I discovered from Google that indicated a memory fault but also that there were a huge number of people having the same problem with that board using fast memory even though theoretically it should support it. So I returned the Corsair memory and ordered 16GB of Team Group Vulcan 3000Mhz DD4 memory, which is the same make I've been using with no trouble with for the past three years in my current PC. I wasn't convinced it was faulty memory though, so I also ordered an Asus Prime 270-K motherboard as I've always had good experiences with ASUS. Just as well, as the replacement memory was still not recognised by the Gigabyte motherboard. So I took everything apart and rebuilt it with the ASUS one and the same Team Group RAM. It fired up straight away so the Gigabyte motherboard will be going back.

So, my new PC comprises:

Asus Prime Z270- K motherboard
Intel Core I7 7700K unlocked LGA1151 CPU
Team Group Vulcan Series White DDR4-3000 CL16 16 GB Internal Memory Kit
Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500 GB
Seagate Barracuda 4 TB 7200RPM  SATA 6 HDD
Pioneer 16X BDRW
Gigabyte GTX 1080 Turbo OC Edition
Coolermaster Seidon 120V V3 Plus liquid CPU cooler
Aerocool MOD XT 750W Modular 80plus Power Supply
Creative Soundblaster Z Sound Card feeding the Logitech Z906 Stereo Speakers 3D 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, 1000 W surround sound system
The PC case is a DEEPCOOL KENDOMEN Red Computer Case with 5 fans preinstalled

Just to finish it off I also bought an ASUS ROG Orion Pro Gaming Headset with 7.1 Surround, Headphone Amplifier

I had originally ordered a GTX 1070 graphics card on the same day I ordered everything else but then Amazon, having accepted the order for a two day delivery emailed me on the evening it was due to be dispatched to say it was out of stock until the next weekend. So I cancelled that and looked for another and then realised that for only 60 UK pounds more than the next GTX 1070 I was considering, I could get the Gigabyte GTX 1080 OC. I checked out the reviews and they seemed generally favourable, so I ordered one of them.

I'm glad I did, because when I fired up the Battlefront 2 beta last night, I was delighted to find the graphics actually defaulted to 3840 x 2160 at 60Hz with the quality set at a mixture of Ultra and high. I switched the Geforce Experience FPS counter on and was getting around 55 to 58 FPS which is fine for me. The graphics are stunning. Better than anything I've ever seen in a game before. That's without overclocking anything and my new system should be clockable if I want to later.

So basically, I'm well pleased even if my CC isn't but it will have three years to get over it.  :D

General Discussion / Major new games all arriving at once.
« on: October 05, 2017, 04:25:55 PM »
There seems to have been very few big budget games that I've been interested in playing this year and no mmorpgs. I've mainly been playing a couple of early access games such as Conan Exiles together with old games that I've bought cheaply in Steam sales. Now at last there are three games I've been waiting for all year coming within a month or so of each other.

I pre-ordered Star Wars - Battlefront 2 and Middle Earth - Shadow of War last month and have Assassin's Creed - Origins on my wish list.

Battlefront 2 has been the first to arrive in the form of early access to the multiplayer beta, which started yesterday. I played it for several hours yesterday evening and must say it looks a lot better than the first remake of Battlefront that came out a couple of years ago. I cancelled my pre order for that one but don't think I'll be doing the same this time. It just seems to be a much more fleshed out product. When the game is released it will have a proper first person campaign story as well as single player, LotRO skirmish style battles against the game's AI. The multiplayer game is much improved too with various modes to choose from, basic crafting systems and character development from earning points as you play to spend on extra skills and improved weapons. Plus a cash shop too of course if you can't wait.

edit: The second part of this post about my new PC is now listed separately.

I see Photobucket have pulled the plug on their free image hosting for forums such as this. What's the best alternative? I did sign up for an Imgur account ages ago but have never used it. Can that be used for forum image hosting the same way as Photobucket?

General Discussion / New Lord of the Rings Game Announced
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:02:21 PM »
WB have announced Middle Earth - Shadow of war, a sequel to Middle Earth - Shadow of Mordor released three years ago.

That one was a good game, so I'll definitely be getting the new one this summer.
Available on PC, PS4 and X Box One.

General Discussion / Conan Exiles and Dark and Light
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:20:14 PM »
NVidia just released a Conan Exiles optimised driver update today. The early access is due for release on 31st of this month.

On the same day, the Dark and Light people have finally released some actual gameplay video. The link is here:

What's become apparent recently is that both games will have fairly small server populations: Around seventy or so. Both will have company provided PvE and PvP servers, together with private, customisable servers. Both will also offer the ability to play solo on one's own PC. So, they seem to be aiming for the same sort of target audience but while CE is releasing next week, D&L seems much less advanced and isn't likely to become available, even in early access form until late Q1 at the earliest.

I think the D&L graphics maybe better but CE looks to have a better building system and some novel ideas such as the capturing of Thrall workers. Since it's the first one to be available, I'll probably buy CE next week, I believe it's going to be around $30. I'll probably play on either an official PvE server, or even solo, as the idea of spending hours building something just for some roving band of players to come along and trash it just for kicks doesn't appeal to me.

Unfortunately, I don't see either game having much longevity with such small server populations. You're going to be seeing the same people over and over again. I played the Forest for a month or two a couple of years ago on a solo server and that had a similar premise to the PvE versions of both the new games: Scavenge for supplies and build your fort while withstanding attacks from enemy NPC's. I managed to build a small fort with strong defences on a cliff edge so it could only be attacked from one direction and could withstand all enemy attacks. Once I'd done that, there was really no further point to the game. However, It was fun for a month or two and that's all I ask for $30. I think the Forest cost much less than that though.

Unfortunately, I still don't see any new mmorpgs due for release this year that excite me at all. LotRO has finally announced the Mordor expansion for the summer, so I may try that with a new character and class perhaps. Has anyone else got any multiplayer games on their radar?

Everquest Next Landmark / Landmark Closing Next Month
« on: January 06, 2017, 03:43:59 AM »
Can't say I'm surprised. It never progressed into anything more than a shell of a game.

I'm definitely going to be more wary about these early access projects. I'd already written off the money I wasted on this a year or more ago, together with the pledge money I put into the Repopulation previously. The only similar project I got my money's worth on so far was Archeage, which I played for a year. Elite Dangerous is another one that hasn't provided a full game yet but at least it's still being worked on.

Having said that, I've registered my interest for Conan exiles' early access available later this month. Also Dark and Light, which should have been in December but is now Q1 2017.

General Discussion / Steam Usernames Updated
« on: August 12, 2016, 12:50:13 AM »
The "bodycount" thread has reminded me I have been meaning to post this one. When the original list was compiled four years ago, I wasn't playing many Steam games so didn't bother adding my name to the list. More recently, most of the games I play are registered with Steam so I thought about adding my name to the pinned post but realised most of the people on there haven't been seen here for quite a while and looking at the Farstar Alliance group at the Steam site, it hasn't been used for several years and is effectively dead.

Xin has changed his name since the original list was made but I now have him on my friends list as Elbee. There are multiple Neirins and I'm not sure which one to send an invite to. Mero, you've never listed a name either. Mine is reaperuk if anyone wants to send me an invite. Anyone else?

General Discussion / We're Doomed!
« on: April 13, 2016, 03:16:30 AM »
Well not quite but there's an open beta of the remake available this coming weekend for PC, XBox 1 and Playstation 4. No codes needed, just download and play. I think I'll give it a whirl. The original Doom was one of the first Windows games I ever played back in the mid 1990's, so time for a bit of nostalgia.

edit: It can be downloaded already:
I'm downloading the PC version from Steam now.

General Discussion / Elite Dangerous: Horizons Expansion
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:12:57 AM »
The closed beta for the new expansion starts on November 24th.

Those of us who bought the premium editions giving beta access as a bonus, will be able to try the new expansion in advance of its expected December release.

Horizons features planetary landings, the Surface Recon Vehicle, mining and ground combat. Hopefully, it will lead to a greatly fleshed out game. As I understand it, the initial release will be set in planets with no atmosphere, but later next year will be extended to planets that do have an atmosphere, needing a lot of tweaking to keep the flying as realistic as possible. Space shuttle style landings perhaps?

General Discussion / New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer
« on: November 08, 2015, 04:06:12 AM »
A new trailer has been released for the Japanese market. It's in English but with Japanese subtitles and is different to the ones we have seen already. This is possibly the final one before release?
