Conan Exiles and Dark and Light
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:20:14 PM »
NVidia just released a Conan Exiles optimised driver update today. The early access is due for release on 31st of this month.

On the same day, the Dark and Light people have finally released some actual gameplay video. The link is here:
http://www.mmorpg.com/dark-and-light/videos/gameplay-exclusive-part-1-of-2-1000005216

What's become apparent recently is that both games will have fairly small server populations: Around seventy or so. Both will have company provided PvE and PvP servers, together with private, customisable servers. Both will also offer the ability to play solo on one's own PC. So, they seem to be aiming for the same sort of target audience but while CE is releasing next week, D&L seems much less advanced and isn't likely to become available, even in early access form until late Q1 at the earliest.

I think the D&L graphics maybe better but CE looks to have a better building system and some novel ideas such as the capturing of Thrall workers. Since it's the first one to be available, I'll probably buy CE next week, I believe it's going to be around $30. I'll probably play on either an official PvE server, or even solo, as the idea of spending hours building something just for some roving band of players to come along and trash it just for kicks doesn't appeal to me.

Unfortunately, I don't see either game having much longevity with such small server populations. You're going to be seeing the same people over and over again. I played the Forest for a month or two a couple of years ago on a solo server and that had a similar premise to the PvE versions of both the new games: Scavenge for supplies and build your fort while withstanding attacks from enemy NPC's. I managed to build a small fort with strong defences on a cliff edge so it could only be attacked from one direction and could withstand all enemy attacks. Once I'd done that, there was really no further point to the game. However, It was fun for a month or two and that's all I ask for $30. I think the Forest cost much less than that though.

Unfortunately, I still don't see any new mmorpgs due for release this year that excite me at all. LotRO has finally announced the Mordor expansion for the summer, so I may try that with a new character and class perhaps. Has anyone else got any multiplayer games on their radar?

Thanks for the info mate!
Due to the limited time i have for playing games i think it's best for me to avoid mmo's. And tbh there aren't any that get me excited.
On the other hand what got me very very excited is VR.
I was lucky to experience (it's really an experience like nothing you have had before) the PSVR at a mate's house.
So the first game he let's me play is a demo called Kitchen (demo from the upcoming Resident Evil). Really overwhelming. You really feel that you are IN the game. Being a horror demo, scary as hall aswell. The wife tried it aswell with the accompanied screams en her chair going in every direction, hehe.
I'm sure this is the future of not only gaming, but lots of stuff, like video (VR makes 3D look really simple) social media, porn, etc. VR is a real mindfuck, i mean i actually felt "Speed" and spikes in my belly when i was on a virtual rollercoster.
So therefore i decided not to buy the PSVR (since i still own a PS4) but going for the Oculus Rift an Touch (since i got a PC that easely meets the recommend settings.

Anyone have experiences with the Rift or Vive?

Sorry for highjacking your post Troy! The MP games i'm buying are Tom Clancy's Wildlands and Mass Effect Anderomeda. Atm playing some Xcom 2. Love that game btw

I noticed from my friends list that you haven't logged into BDO for over 40 days. I just got the 500 hours played award last week on my new account, which I started last November, the same time as you. The latest expansion was just released yesterday so the game area is now around four times the size of that at launch. Still lots of things to do. My next ambition is to build one of the new ocean going sailboats equipped with canons. Will take quite a while to get all the materials together though.

VR is still too expensive for me to consider atm. Also, although I don't wear spectacles all the time, I do for reading and using a PC monitor. How does that work out with a VR headset? I'd imagine the screens would be too close for my eyes to focus on.

Sicknas said he was using a Rift set for Elite Dangerous and No man's Sky in a post last August. Perhaps he'll give us an idea of his thoughts if he sees this post?

The rift works with glasses, but it's always best to try before buying, with the psvr you can even move the lenses.

I tried Swtor again, just before Christmas. The new expansion's story is okay, but the galactic command system ruined the game for me.

Moreover, I saw that Lotro is now being run by Standing Stone Games and Daybreak Games.

The new Star Wars Xwing PSVR mission looks fun. It reminds me of the old X-Wing and Tie fighter games. I may get the PSVR when I can afford to.

I am waiting for more info on Mass Effect Anderomeda. But the new trailer looks interesting: https://youtu.be/NNG_szaXNNU

I see my name mentioned 😊

I'm using an oculus.rift to play Elite Dangerous, but not No mans Sky (sorry if I misinformed elsewhere). I love E:D in VR, it's much more immersive and makes flying much more intuitive. The only problem for me with E:D is the content. It still feels like a solo game and I come back to it for periods after new content arrives or when I was pushing to get an Anaconda. I've travelled to Colonia and waiting for something to happen. I don't wear glasses so can't really inform your considerations. I tried wearing a pair of sunglasses and the frame did not impede the rift headset or make it feel less comfortable.

Giving Conan Exile a go and it's holding my interest for now. Hope this one has legs.

I worked my way up to an Anaconda in Elite Dangerous over a year ago but then had nothing more to aim for at the time. I've only ever played for around one hour since then to try the planetary landings on the test server though. I'm hoping as they add extra content it will become interesting again.

I was enjoying Conan Exiles on one of the official PvE servers but decided to stop playing until they get the hosting switched over to Gameservers.com. I wouldn't want to spend hours building in a persistant world on an unofficial server when there is no guarantee on how long it's going to be available. Hopefully, the new official servers will be up and running within a day or two.

I gave up waiting for the official CE server I had been playing on to come back again (It did eventually last week after over a month missing but my character had been wiped) and started playing the game solo, It's a great building game. I've got a huge three storey fort I've probably spent seventy hours building but there's not much else going on in solo mode apart from gathering resources for building, killing and cooking animals for food and more aggressive ones such as crocodiles and rhinos for XP.  Still, it's more enjoyable for me than Landmark ever was. Both PvE and PvP online modes have serious problems with cheating and griefing though so I still wouldn't recommend them to anyone thinking of trying the game.

I'm starting to get a bit bored now, and will probably go back to one of my other games. I logged into my Lotro warden a couple of days ago but just couldn't even begin to remember how the UI controls worked. The interface is so over complicated compared with all the more recent mmorpg's I've played in recent years. Also, I switched to the Evernight server when they had the server merges a while ago having seen on the TLA website that was where they were going and just in case I ever wanted to request rejoining the people I know. However, my friends list has been wiped in the merge so I can't even see who is still playing. I thought I'd take a look at the old CoT and TLA websites but discovered that Guildportal.com expired around eighteen months ago, so they are both gone. I found the new TLA one but it seems little used. I did see a recent post from Khaznah listed though, so at least he's still playing presumably. Are there any TFA members still active there? It's occurred to me as I'm writing this that I think the game officially launched ten years ago this month. Amazing :o

As for Dark and Light, the beta has been delayed once again and there doesn't appear to be a new date, so we needn't hold our breath waiting for that one. http://www.mmorpg.com/dark-and-light/news/beta-delayed-though-how-long-remains-unknown-1000043596

I'm definitely watching that new version of Dark and Light VERY closely.

Early access has just been released on Steam. I don't think I'm going to dive in though at that price. It seems there are very small number of players per server. It's not an mmorpg in any way. Stiill as a Steam Release you can try it out and get your money back if you claim before playing for over two hours.

From what I've read, not only from Steam comments but also on MMORPG.COM, it's utterly bugged and barely playable, and also the PvP ganking is more than rampant, you have people camping the entry zones all the time.
So yeah, I'm going to pass for now.

EDIT: they've actually added PVE servers, so I'll give it a try this week end. If it really is unplayable, I'll just ask for a refund before 2 hours played.

Well, my report will be short.
The game looks decently good, seems interesting mechanic wise, but online play is just not an option for now. Even on low populated PvE servers, there's unplayable lag, like 10 to 30s delay when gathering, rubberbanding, it's awful.

In solo mode it's much better, but that's not really why I'm playing such a game. If we can make our own server and play without lag someday, I will give it another try. Would be nice to play this game with the Farstar survivors.

My advice: avoid it for now, it's VERY rough.

I will play a bit more until the 2hr limit and get a refund.

There's a similar game to try soon by the way, Citadel: Forged with Fire, also on Steam.

Yes. I read the review by a staff member at mmorpg and they said much the same thing. It mirrors my experience with Conan Exiles actually. That too was only really playable in solo mode for weeks after early access launch and I got bored with it months ago. In fact I just uninstalled it earlier as reading about Dark and Light reminded me of the hard drive space I was wasting.

The few gameplay videos and screenshots from D&L show promise but I think it has a long way to go before it's going to be worth throwing money at.

Dark and Light is in the Steam summer sale at around half price until 5th July. It's now so cheap, I decided to give it a try. I've only tried solo so far and only for around half an hour but haven't seen any bugs yet. The tutorial so far only shows the basics of harvesting and crafting though and is pretty bland. It seems fairly basic from what I've seen so far and the graphics aren't that great even though I'm playing at 2160P (getting around 80 FPS with my GTX 1080)

I just finished the end game of the Forest a few days ago, which is another low budget survival game but I suspect a much better one.

I'll try Dark and Light a bit more but I don't see it keeping me interested long term.
